JOB SUMMARY
The Survey Crew Chief is a critical leadership position responsible for managing field survey operations and supporting the successful delivery of civil engineering projects. This role ensures fieldwork is performed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, applicable regulations, and industry standards. The Survey Crew Chief plays a key role in establishing effective workflows, maintaining quality control, and delivering reliable survey data that supports engineering design and construction efforts.

We’re looking for someone with experience who can start on a PRN, as-needed basis, with the potential to move into a part-time role depending on workload, and possibly transition into full-time employment if the work supports it.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the daily operations of field surveys, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of survey assignments.
• Conduct various types of surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction staking, and as-built surveys.
• Perform field calculations and make adjustments as needed to ensure data accuracy.
• Operate and maintain survey equipment, including total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, and data collectors.
• Verify the accuracy of field data and oversee the preparation of detailed field notes and sketches.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and CAD designers to coordinate survey tasks and meet project requirements.
• Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to address survey-related questions or issues.
• Provide input during project planning by offering insight into site conditions and survey requirements.
• Train, mentor, and supervise survey crew members to ensure compliance with safety protocols, company standards, and project expectations.
• Foster a positive team environment that emphasizes professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Manage crew schedules to ensure the efficient use of resources and timely completion of assignments.
• Ensure all survey work complies with regulatory standards, legal requirements, and project-specific guidelines.
• Review and validate field data before submitting it to the engineering team for design integration.
• Maintain accurate records of survey work, equipment usage, and project timelines.
• Oversee the maintenance and calibration of survey instruments and tools to ensure reliability and accuracy.
• Stay current with advancements in surveying technology and recommend equipment upgrades or process improvements when appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of field survey experience, including at least 2 years in a Crew Chief or other leadership role.
• Proficiency in operating survey instruments, including GPS/GNSS systems, robotic total stations, and data collection software.
• Strong understanding of boundary law, topographic mapping, and construction layout principles.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D and other CAD platforms is a plus.
• Florida Surveyor in Training (SIT/STI) or Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) certification is strongly preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal surveying standards and regulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
To perform the essential functions of this position, the individual must be able to meet the physical demands associated with both field and limited office work. This role requires frequent fieldwork and site visits, including walking on uneven terrain and working in outdoor conditions such as heat, humidity, and rain, as well as in and around active construction zones. Field activities may involve carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and standing or moving for extended periods. The individual must also be able to maintain regular attendance, follow instructions, understand workplace materials, and communicate effectively with others. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The work environment for this position is primarily field-based, with some office work as needed. In the office, the noise level is typically moderate, and standard office equipment is used. In the field, the employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, uneven terrain, and construction-related hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and is required during fieldwork. Menadier Engineering, LLC is seeking a dependable Survey Rodman to support our field survey operations on an as-needed basis. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, can follow direction, and is comfortable assisting survey crews on a variety of civil engineering and land surveying projects.

The Survey Rodman will assist the Survey Crew Chief and field team with daily survey activities, including construction staking, boundary surveys, topographic surveys, as-built surveys, and general field data collection.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Survey Crew Chief with field survey work as needed
• Hold and move survey rods, prisms, targets, and other field equipment
• Help set up, break down, and maintain survey equipment
• Assist with construction staking, boundary, topographic, and as-built surveys
• Locate and mark survey points, stakes, monuments, and control points
• Clear light brush or minor obstructions when necessary to complete fieldwork
• Carry equipment and supplies to and from survey locations
• Follow instructions carefully and communicate clearly with the field crew
• Work safely around roads, construction sites, wooded areas, and active job sites
• Maintain a professional appearance and attitude when representing Menadier Engineering
• Support general field tasks as assigned

Qualifications

• Prior survey field experience preferred, but not required
• Experience as a rodman, instrument person, field technician, construction laborer, or similar outdoor role is a plus
• Ability to work outdoors in Florida weather conditions
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry equipment for extended periods
• Must be reliable, punctual, and able to report to assigned job sites as scheduled
• Ability to follow directions and work well as part of a crew
• Basic understanding of construction sites or land surveying is helpful
• Valid driver’s license preferred
• Must be able to pass any required background check, drug screening, or job site access requirements, if applicable

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain
• Ability to work in heat, humidity, rain, wooded areas, roadside conditions, and construction environments
• Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and stand for extended periods

Schedule

This is a PRN / as-needed position. Hours will vary depending on project workload, weather, crew scheduling, and client needs. This position does not guarantee a set number of hours each week.
